This week has felt really heavy.
If you’ve been following the news or read yesterday’s newsletter, then you know San Diego experienced a devastating loss this week. Something we shouldn’t just move past quietly.
My job here is usually to give you the inside scoop on fun things happening around San Diego. But I also recognize that I have the privilege of using this platform to help show up for people when our community needs it too. Like my best friend always says: “if you want the village, you have to be a villager.”
And sometimes being part of a community simply means showing up for people even when you aren’t directly affected. So today, I pulled together a guide on how to support San Diego’s Muslim community following the Islamic Center shooting, with ways to help, donate, support local organizations, and share resources with others.
And because it’s Mental Health Awareness Month, I also put together a local guide to mental health resources across San Diego. Please check on your people. Please check on yourself too.
Anyway… I’ll hop off my soapbox now. The newsletter will return to its usual nonsense, but hopefully the support, compassion, and care for our neighbors stick around a lot longer than the headlines will.
JUST ANNOUNCED
A lot of grunge-era bands cleaned things up over the years. L7 still sounds like they could start a fight in a parking lot. Catch The Last Hurrah Tour at Casbah on 10/7.
If you’ve ever fallen into a late-night rabbit hole of insanely talented guitar players online, there’s a good chance Andy McKee was somewhere in there. Catch him in person at Museum of Making Music on 7/30.
Before his solo career exploded, Marco Antonio Solís was the frontman of Los Bukis, aka one of the most important groups in Latin music history. North Island on 10/2 is gonna have generations singing together.
You know a vocal group is good when they can make people voluntarily listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. Straight No Chaser brings the Making Spirits Bright Tour to Harrah’s Resort on 11/14.
WAIT, there are other just-announced shows from Laundry Day, Meduza, Son Volt, Journey, Shakey Graves, and sooo many more!
